KIDS ARE A WEALTH OF KNOWLEDGE
As we get older and set in our ways we forget that as kids we found unique way of solving problems!
As an eight year old boy that loved to fish is was of great excitement when I found out they were going to stalk the river by my house the very next day my buddy and I set off for the river to fish we had our worms and we were ready.
We fished most of the first day without even a nibble we figured that maybe the fish were scarred from being dumped into the river.
The next day we were back again when we ran out of worms we tried to catch grass hoppers after some time of being out ran by them we had a problem lots of time but no Bait!
Well we used the only thing that every kid has and that was bubble gum and much to our surprise the fish started biting like crazy we just about had our limit when a man that was fishing up stream from us came down and asked us if we would tell him what we were using for bait.
Well being eight years old we were more than happy to tell him and as soon as we told him that we were using bubble gum he got angry and said if you don’t want to tell me that’s OK but you don’t have to lie!.
Well we were not sure what to do we had told him the truth and all we got was anger so I said to him give me your hook and he pushed me the end of his pole and very slowly I reached into my mouth and took out the gum I was chewing wrapped it on his hook and said go ahead cast it in with disgust he flipped his line into the water and no sooner had it landed and he had a fish on.
After landing his fish he walked up to us and with a slightly red face he asked, “You boys got any more gum ?”
We sold him the gum we had left at a slightly inflated price you know as a kid you have to take advantage of every opportunity to make a dime!
And we were off with our limit of fish and more gum money, it was many years before I found out why the gum worked it seems that the pellets they feed fish before they are released have molasses in them! So the fish did have a sweet tooth.
Just goes to show you were there’s a will there’s a way.
